  • The Jewish Agency budgeted $382,000 in 2002 for the WUJS Institute in Arad. The WUJS Institute, established in 1967 is a non-profit organization whose basic objective is to encourage the immigration and absorption of young college graduates, primarily from Western countries, to Israel. Dozens of students participated in the year-long program in 2002.

  • The Jewish Agency budgeted $14,000 in 2002 for a special fund, co-sponsored with the Ministry of Absorption, to help in the absorption of immigrant scientists and artists from the former Soviet Union.

  • The Jewish Agency budgeted $50,000 in 2002 for a research project at the Ben Zvi Institute on the history of recent immigration from countries of distress. This is the last installment in a five-year project.

  • 25,053 new immigrants, 13,657 of them from the FSU, have arrived in Israel since the beginning of the year.

  • 558 new immigrants arrived this week. 405 of them are from the FSU and Eastern Europe, 27 are from France, 39 are from Argentina, 53 are from Ethiopia, and the rest are from Belgium, Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, the US, and Canada.
