CENTRAL BUREAU OF STATISTICS: NEGATIVE GROWTH OF -0.9% IN 2002

The Central Bureau of Statistics this week publicized its early assessments of the state of the economy in 2002, which includes a number of negative economic data. According to these data, there will be a drop of 0.9 percent in the gross domestic product (GDP), a drop of 5 percent in exports, and a drop of 2.9 percent in GDP per capita (a figure reflecting the standard of living).

The government's original growth target for 2002 was 4 percent, and the gap between this target and the anticipated growth of minus 0.9 percent is due to the fact that production was some NIS 25 billion less than the forecast. The 2002 state budget was based on the higher growth estimate, but the figure was lowered several times during the course of the year, resulting in budget cuts.
