NIS 1.2 MILLION GRANT TO AKKO - GIFT OF INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS

The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews has given the city of Akko a grant of NIS 1.2 million. The grant, made up of contributions given by American Christian friends of Israel, was given by Devora Ganani, director-general of the Fellowship, at a ceremony that took place in the municipality of Akko, in which Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and other ministers participated.

The Prime Minister is giving special attention to Akko and Lod, to help these cities overcome their distress. The IFCJ has also joined the effort to assist them, just as it helps 30 other cities and communities throughout Israel with contributions totaling NIS 23 million. The Fellowship, headed by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, has recently contributed a total of NIS 34 million to Lod.

Ganani detailed the projects in Akko, for which the contribution is earmarked. First and foremost is the Ben Gurion neighborhood, which brought about a revolution in the area: the construction of a multi-purpose building (kindergarten, club for youth and new immigrants), and intensified studies for children from the Caucasus, as well as funding to hire three municipal workers to help recently released IDF soldiers and youth.

The Prime Minister met recently with the mayors of several cities. A number of them complained about the difficult situation in their cities and the economic distress. The Prime Minister told them that he is aware of the situation, but, according to him, the Friendship League helps mayors solve their urgent problems. "You should know that it is not by chance that the Fellowship contributes to you," he said. "Somebody asked them to. I always turn to Rabbi Eckstein to help when the situation is particularly bad, and he responds."
