SALVAGED TORAH SCROLLS FROM DESECRATED WALES SYNAGOGUE BROUGHT TO ISRAEL

Torah scrolls en route to synagogues

Six Torah scrolls from the Swansea Synagogue in Wales, which were desecrated in an anti-Semitic vandal attack several weeks ago, were brought to Israel this week on a special Jewish Agency flight. The Swansea Jewish community, under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Joseph Ives of Cardiff, was behind the initiative of bringing the Torah scrolls to Israel.

The Torah scrolls were flown to Israel on an El Al night flight and arrive in the Ben Gurion Airport the following morning. Four of them were donated to the Israel Defense Forces to be given to IDF bases and the others will be donated to educational institutions in Israel.

According to Dubi Bergman, head of the Jewish Agency Mission to the United Kingdom, who was instrumental in bringing the Torah scrolls to Israel, the Jewish community of Wales numbers around 1300. About 1200 of them live in Cardiff and 100 in Swansea. They are descended from people who immigrated from Eastern Europe about 200 years ago.

The Torah scrolls were dedicated at a special ceremony at the Chaplaincy Corps Base in Tsriffin (Sarafand), under the aegis of Brig. Gen. Rabbi Israel Weiss, Chaplain General of the IDF.
