TORONTO: SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN FOR ISRAEL

Heads of the campaign estimate that the final sum will top the initial goal of $ 60 million

Israel Emergency Campaign 2003, which began four months ahead of schedule in mid-April, is on a course toward unprecedented success.

Organizers now expect the final tally to surpass their original estimate of $60 million.

"Our community understands the terrible toll that 20 months of terror have taken on Israel," says Ronnie Appleby, Chair of the Emergency Campaign, with Howard Sokolowski. "We have a marvelous community that has responded in an extraordinary way."

That community response has resulted in contributions from more than 14,000 donors, as well as $16 million in gift increases, which will be designated for Israel's emergency needs. "There's no telling how far we can go if we maintain this incredible momentum," says Howard Sokolowski. "The sky's the limit."

"This fundraising success is largely due to our donors' recognition of the extraordinary events in Israel and the impact of the terror on Israelis," adds Dr. Allan Reitzes, president of UJA Federation.

All gift increases and new gifts to Israel Emergency Campaign 2003 will support vital programs in Israel including assistance to victims of terror; increased security at day care centers and other facilities for children; and enhanced medical, psychological and human services for Israel's most vulnerable.
