Close to 100,000 people marched up Manhattan's Fifth Avenue in the annual "Salute to Israel Parade" that took place this past Sunday.

According to media estimates, an additional one million spectators viewed the parade, which lasted from 11 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon. The massive presence of Jewish students - and especially a group of students from various Hillel houses in New York - was particularly notable. A group of 150 "American Students for Israel" marched as well. The group held a special information seminar in New York last weekend, organized by Orli Gil, Israeli Consul for Academic Affairs in the US. Among the lecturers who addressed the students was Alon Pinkas, Israel's Consul-General in New York.

According to Ruth Kastner, who organized the event, it has been many years since such large numbers of people turned out for the Salute to Israel Parade.

A small group of Palestinians held a small, but noisy, counter-rally.
