ALEXANDER BIRNBAUM OF KISHINEV - WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S JEWISH IDENTITY CONTEST; WILL RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIP TO BAR ILAN UNIVERSITY

15-year old Alexander Birnbaum of Kishinev won first place in the Jewish Identity Contest for Jewish youth from the former Soviet Union that was held this week at Bar Ilan University. The university awarded the winner a scholarship.

Seventeen youth from various cities throughout the FSU took part in the contest, which was sponsored by the Jewish Agency's Education Department, Bar Ilan University, and the Jewish National Fund. This was the first trip to Israel for most of the participants, who came specially for the contest.

This was the sixth annual Jewish Identity contest for youth age 12 to 16, and it dealt with various topics including Jewish history, Zionism, aliyah, Jewish tradition, Israel's wars, etc.

The youngsters will remain in Israel until May 12 and will tour the Jerusalem area.
