TWO FLIGHTS WITH IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE FROM ARGENTINA ON INDEPENDENCE DAY, MARKING 54 YEARS OF ALIYAH

The Jewish Agency marked Israel's 54th Day of Independence with two special flights carrying 212 immigrants from Argentina to Israel. This brings the number of immigrants from Argentina to 1446, since the beginning of this aliya in 2002, which is more than the total number of immigrants who came to Israel from that country throughout 2001 (1,416 people). Sallai Meridor, Chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive said that the group was the most important gift Israel is getting for Independence Day, and that their immigrations helps strengthen Israel He noted that since the establishment of the state, 2,902,200 immigrants have come to Israel from throughout the world. The some newcomers will reside in Jewish Agency absorption centers and others will move directly to towns and cities throughout Israel. A group of 27 youth from Argentina arrived in Israel the day before the Day of Independence, joining 88 others youngsters who came earlier in the year to study in the Na'aleh Zohar high school program.
