RISHON LEZION CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS
OPENED "HEBREW SONG MONTH"

Hebrew music month, sponsored by Omanut La'am, Heichal Hatarbut, and the Jewish Agency, opened this week throughout Israel in order to encourage and promote Hebrew songs. Israeli's leading singers performed "oldies but goodies" from all times, at the opening event that launched the month-long music fest and that was part of the centennial celebration of the founding of Rishon Lezion.

The event was aired on TV as the finale to the Independence day broadcasts. Jewish Agency treasurer Chaim Chesler opened the event. In his remarks, he noted the connection between Rishon Lezion, which is one of the earliest settlements in pre-state Israel, and Hebrew song, which contributed greatly to the forging of an Israeli identity: "Hebrew song unites us and links us to the history of the period of independence."

Many events focusing on Hebrew song will take place in community centers throughout Israel during the coming month.
