Some 400 Jewish students from Latin America who are in Israel for a 10-day educational trip organized by "Birthright" and the Jewish Agency, will attend an aliyah and education fair in Jerusalem. The fair is organized by the Jewish Agency and is designed to present to the overseas students, possibilities of absorption in Israel. Two hundred Jewish students from France who are also in Israel on a "Birthright" tour will attend the fair.

At the fair, booths will provide information on educational and aliyah issues, on higher education in Israel, programs for tourists, olim rights, employment for academics, and more. There will be a special meeting point, called "Cafe Oleh", where the touring students can meet peer olim who have been successfully absorbed in Israel. The students will also help prepare educational programs for youngsters in their respective communities back home.

This is the first group from Latin America to make an educational trip to Israel this winter. In all, over the next few weeks the "Birthright" program will bring 6,000 Jewish students - mostly from Latin America and the FSU - to Israel.

The "Birthright" project was founded two years ago, as a program run jointly by the Jewish Agency, various national organizations and Jewish philanthropists, in an effort to find a solution to assimilation. The program targets Jewish students all over the world enabling them to make a short visit to Israel. Here they meet with Israelis and participate in workshops to strengthen their Jewish and Zionist identity.

Amos Hermon, JAFI Education Committee Chair says: "The Jewish Agency has made considerable efforts to bring a large number of students from Argentina, despite the serious economic crisis in that country. Their arrival in Israel is a rare window of opportunity. We are able to provide them both with an education and employment in Israel, thus helping their families to make aliyah in the future as well".

Within this context, a group of young media people from Latin America will be arriving in Israel, including 10 young journalists from Argentina, for an 11-day visit this coming Sunday. The trip is organized by the Jewish Agency, the WZO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
