ISRAEL REDUCES PRESSURE IN THE TERRITORIES FOLLOWING DROP IN PALESTINIAN VIOLENCE

U.S. Envoy Athur Zinni Returns to Region - Warnings of Attacks Continue

The IDF evacuated its troops from the Jenin and Samarea regions and limited the number of its forces in Ramallah, Hebron and other Palestinian cities. Concurently, Prime Minister Sharon noted that he will not allow Yasser Arafat to leave Ramallah before the assassins of Minister Rehavam Ze'evi (Ghandi), z"l are apprehended.

The respite came at the heals of a week of reduced Palestinian violence and in anticipation of the return of special envoy Arthur Zinni to the region. By the same token, senior security officials including Chief of Staff, Shaul Mofaz and the Coordinator Operations in the Territories, Amos Gilad noted that the Palestinian Authority is not doing enough to put an end to terrorism and many of the terrorists wanted by Israel, have not been apprehended.

The same sources noted that warnings of impending attacks continue, and heads of the Council of Judea and Samarea who are worried that the IDF's relief in the region will lead to a new wave of violence, asked for an emergency meeting with the Prime Minister.
