DAY CAMP FOR 100 CHILDREN OF GILO AT THE JERUSALEM VARIETY CLUB CENTER

The Variety Club of Jerusalem is sponsoring a day camp for 100 children from the Gilo neighborhood, in conjunction with the Gilo Neighborhood Administration and the Jerusalem Municipality.

The children, ages 4-12 (including 20 children from disadvantaged families) enjoy computers, crafts, music, traffic safety, animals and swimming pool activities. Gilo's children enjoyed water slides brought in from Tiberias, however, due to the severe water shortage, Sam Raz, the center's director operated the slides without water. The camp was subsidized, charging NIS 500 for three weeks, and only NIS 200 for disadvantaged children.

The unique day camp at the Variety Club camp for children with special needs-autism, deaf, blind, learning disabled, children at-risk who have been removed from their homes by court order due to physical violence or sexual abuse, and children from single parenting homes, concluded this week. The 10-day camp session served 100 children, Jews and Arabs alike.

The groups were kept at only 5-6 children each in order to ensure maximal individual attention and guidance to each child. The Director of the Variety Club Center, Dr. Sam Raz, explained that the camp's main theme this year is traffic safety education for children with special needs. The camp is supported by both the Ministries of Education and Transportation.
