CAMP COUNSELORS FROM US AND ISRAEL IN CHERKASSY COMMUNITY

In the framework of the three-way partnership between the communities of Ofakim/Merchavim (Israel), Metrowest/Bergen County (NJ) and Cherkassy (Ukraine), three students from Ofakim/Merchavim and three more from Metrowest traveled at the end of July to Cherkassy, Ukraine. There they will staff two summer camps on the shores of the Black Sea, a project sponsored jointly by the three communities.

The two camps, which are to run simultaneously for a period of two weeks in August, are meant to expose the campers to both Jewish and Israeli topics. Each camp will have about 100 participants-70 children and 30 adults-from the Cherkassy Jewish community.

The Israeli and American camp counselors underwent joint training and orientation in Israel prior to their departure for the Ukraine. During the period of training the Metrowest counselors stayed at the homes of their Israeli counterparts in the Ofakim/Merchavim Partnership 2000 region.
