Bardawil was killed when a bomb that he was preparing for an attack against Israelis exploded. The terrorist was given a state funeral with thousands of participants, representatives of the Palestinian Authority and various political movements. The Governor of Tulkarm, member of the Fatah leadership Az-a-Din Alsharif, conveyed condolences from PA Chairman Yasser Arafat to the terrorist's family. The following is a translation of the printed announcement: "The military arm of the Islamic Jihad movement has published an official mourning announcement on the death of the martyr. The fighter, Ashraf Bardawil, died last Thursday (June 7, 2001) of wounds sustained while preparing an explosive device, which he intended to take to an area with a high concentration of Zionist soldiers in the Tulkarm area".
