"SUNSET IN THE EAST": NEW BOOK ABOUT DESTRUCTION OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN ARAB COUNTRIES

BY ITAMAR LEVIN, PUBLISHED BY MINISTRY OF DEFENSE

Some 600,000 Jews have made aliyah from Arab countries since the establishment of the State of Israel. A large proportion of them was forced to live for years in almost sub-human conditions, an outcome of the economic difficulties endured by Israel during its early years. One fact remembered by almost all olim from Arab countries was the loss of a source of livelihood, property and savings.

Itamar Levin, head of the news department at the Globes newspaper researched the issue of the property of victims several years ago, and continues with great sensitivity to accompany the struggle for compensation for Jewish property from the holocaust period. He is now conducting a study of organized dispossession suffered by ancient Jewish communities in Arab lands. The book contains revelations that might prove extremely important when political negotiations in the Middle East reach their final stages.

The book reveals details of great thievery, going on for decades, destroying thousands of families and amounting to millions of dollars in damage. Neighbors and authorities stole Jewish property simply due to the religion of its owners, turning Jews into penniless refugees.

The book "Sunset in the East" presents Israeli leaders and public opinion in general, with the challenge of guaranteeing that olim from Arab countries will see the justice that they have been deprived of for more than fifty years.
