Worth Noting - Palestinian Comments Despite International Efforts To Bring About Cease-fire

HAMAS LEADER: "WE WILL NOT CONCEDE PALESTINE, AKKO, HAIFA AND JERUSALEM

On July 6th 2001, the Hamas held a meeting at a school in the Jebaliya refugee camp, with the participation of the Palestinian legislative council, the school principal, teachers and hundreds of students. Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin lectured students from the junior-high school on his ideology, as follows (according to the Hamas internet site): "This is the generation of freedom and victory ..... the Zionist enemy wants to defeat us and make us concede Palestine, Akko, Haifa, Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa mosque, and this will not occur".

In his address to the audience, Sahail Alhindi, who represented the teachers on behalf of UNWRA, praised the students - active in the Hamas and have carried out suicide attacks against Israel in recent months - emphasizing that: "The road to Palestine is filled with the blood of the martyrs who have written history with their bodies". The message is that the younger generation in Palestinian schools is being educated towards the "armed struggle" and the destruction of the State of Israel, and that this continues to be approved by the PA, with teachers employed by UN agencies (UNWRA) encouraging this.

Arafat presented his political approach towards the Hamas quite clearly in the presence of foreign journalists on 29th June 2001. He emphasized that he will not order the arrest of Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists as Israel has demanded, since the PA "respects these organizations and because we are unified".
