DIRECTION OF "KIVUNIM" IS ISRAEL
TENS OF TEACHERS FROM JEWISH SCHOOLS IN US TO
EDUCATIONAL VISIT IN ISRAEL WITHIN "KIVUNIM" PROGRAM FRAMEWORK

Within the unique educational program in conjunction with the Jewish Agency's Department for Jewish Zionist Education, 65 teachers and educators from the US Jewish education network will arrive in Israel for a study tour next month.

The project, which is called "Kivunim" (directions), is now in its third consecutive year. It is unique in the fact that it combines cultural, social, spiritual and educational activity in several areas.

"Kivunim" adopts an open, critical approach, allowing for the expression of a wide range of opinions and streams", explained Peter Geffen, a veteran educator from the US and program founder. "Our objective is to create an optimal model for an integrative school, where teachers will receive the tools to combine both worlds - Jewish and universal - in the best possible way". Geffen believes that this will help Jewish society in the US to preserve its identity and character, as an integral part of American multi-cultural society.

Since the project was launched in 1999, it has become immensely popular. In the first year, just 40 teachers participated in the program, and in the year 2000 there were already 78 participants. Geffen believes that the power of the Israel trip can influence the Jewish identity of each teacher. "Schools which participate in the program believe that it is extremely important for teachers to visit Israel and undergo as many educational and cultural experiences as possible", explained Geffen. "Only in this way can we create an integrated curriculum and build a joint program based on recognition and personal experience".

The next "Kivunim" group will be arriving in Israel on June 28th, and will include teachers coming here for the first time. The second group, due to arrive on July 2nd will include teachers who have already participated in the program and are now returning for a second or third time.
