YOUNG ADULTS ARRIVE FOR "MARVA"
Raphael and Benjamin Halili from England, the nephews of Israeli Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz, are among the 40 young adults from the US, Canada, Engand, Australia, Germany, and South Africa who arrived in Israel in mid-June to take part in the Jewish Agency's Marva program. The eight week program offers young Jewish adults a unique opportunity to experience the physical and emotional challenges of Israel and its people. For those considering Aliyah, or who just want to strengthen their ties to Israel, Marva is a group experience like no other. The program is based in the southern Negev at a Gadna base. Participants also spend considerable time in various other parts of the country, including Jerusalem, Sde Boker, the Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley, the Wingate Sports Institute near Netanya, various development towns, and kibbutzim. The program's activities range from camp craft, navigation, and topography to hikes, seminars and walking tours, participation in training exercises, and living in field conditions. Special emphasis is placed on Israel's security situation and settlement of the land, through lectures on specific social and political issues. The entire program is conducted in Hebrew, as is the entire program. Since participants come from all over the world, Hebrew becomes the common language of communication, allowing for significant improvement of Hebrew skills. |
